The Merger
Ambrose University College
Two long-established, independent institutions merging into Ambrose University College created the need for a new common identity. Tightly squeezed into expiring rented space in downtown Calgary, the school also needed to immediately raise funds to build a new campus. Finally, Ambrose wanted to recruit new students and communicate effectively with parents, alumni and donors.
More Than a Logo
The new identity we created for Ambrose combines visual symbols with stories. We started by developing a logo, together with graphic and written explanation of its meaning. Next we researched the historical figure of Ambrose, and introduced him to the school’s target audiences through an original woodcut illustration and series of stories from his life. We used tools as diverse as posters and payroll inserts as help to introduce and build commitment to the new identity. We also attended to details, right down to design of a diploma seal.
A Comprehensive Approach
For the capital campaign, we produced a series of coordinated video and print pieces, tailored to fit different potential donor and sponsor audiences. In the same way, we used video and radio to engage potential students and their parents. We expanded on the core brand message through viewbooks. For these longer pieces, we combined our design skills with original photography and copy-writing to further tell the institution’s story.
The tools were effective. In September, 2008, Ambrose moved into its fabulous new campus on the western outskirts of Calgary. Enrolment continues to increase as their brand continues to gains local and national recognition.
