The Silk Road Spice Merchant
Freshwater Creative created a brand that evokes the rich history of the silk road, an ancient spice trading route. The brand brings a combination of exotic graphic elements, typography, rich colours, and beautiful photography to evoke the sensuous experience of spice shopping
Packaging
A scalable package
While maintaining the rich brand of the Silk Road, the packaging had to be scalable, cost-effective, and easy to assemble. Because the Silk Road offered a huge variety of spices with new spices, blends, and rubs being added all the time, the packaging had to be able to grow with the product offering. A variety of labels sizes and formats were pre-printed with the brand, and individually hand-written with the ingredients. Stickers were printed to seal up craft-paper packaging, and rubber stamps included to stamp the final boxes. While a label printer was later added to speed up the process, the hand-crafted look has been maintained.
An Historical Approach
All of The Silk Road’s print work - from business cards, letterheads, envelopes, to magazine ads and handouts, maintain the traditional look established in the brand. Rich photography provides an ideal backdrop for the logo, bringing colour and exotic textures to the print work while helping showcase the product itself. Even the paper stock used - linen textures and craft paper helps build the handmade, craftsman look.

A Virtual Store Front
The Silk Road did not yet have a store front when the brand an e-commerce site were designed. In order to build customer trust and create the craftsman look, the site was designed to give the feel of a retail store. Wood textures, rich colours, shadows were used, as well as navigation that mirrored the label design, in order to build a connection to the store. Since launching the store has been launched, with Freshwater Creative working to build a consistent look through their signage and labeling.
